Manhole cover in Vienna, Austria

A grid of square holes dominates the central surface of this example, framed by a repeating hexagonal motif, a common but interesting design choice for urban infrastructure. The central plaque bears the inscription 'FERN WÄRME', which the Institute of Humanology is pleased to identify as a designation for district heating. The apparent surface wear and rusting suggest long-term exposure to the elements and heavy traffic, which is only natural for such an artefact.
